VPN for PlayStation 5 in 2026
PS5 remains the current-gen leader, with over 75 million units sold by 2026. VPN usage on PS5 has specific cases very different from other platforms: no native Sony app, so config goes via router or PC sharing. Main use cases: regional PSN for games/pricing, streamer DDoS protection, early access, and cloud gaming via PS Plus Premium.
Case 1 — Unblock the regional PlayStation Store
The golden age (2018-2022) and its end
For several years, PSN Argentina and PSN Turkey enabled massive savings:
- Red Dead Redemption 2: €20 instead of €60 (PSN Argentina 2020)
- Spider-Man Miles Morales: €25 instead of €70 (PSN Turkey 2021)
- PS Plus Extra: €30/year instead of €100/year
The mechanism: create a PSN account with country = Argentina or Turkey, buy with a locally-purchased gift card or prepaid card.
The 2026 reality
Sony harmonized prices globally in 2022-2024:
- Turkish PSN: 3-4x price hikes over 2 years, now close to EU
- Argentine PSN: since August 2023, Sony requires an Argentine credit card for purchases — foreign players blocked
- Nigerian, Indian PSN: new accounts, still slightly cheaper but catalogue restricted
Our verdict: the regional PSN hack is no longer a viable strategy for 2026. Too much friction, too little gain, account lock risk. Exception: regional exclusives (some Japanese games not distributed in EU).
Procedure (if you insist)
- VPN on PS5 (router or PC share) → connected to Argentina / Japan / Turkey
- Create a new PSN account with matching country
- Buy a PSN gift card for that country on marketplace (G2A, Eneba — beware counterfeits)
- Redeem the gift card on the account
- Buy games in local currency
Risks: account lock, non-transferable purchases to main account, must keep the account to download/update.
Case 2 — DDoS protection for PS5 streamers
Console streamers = frequent DDoS targets. PS5 has no VPN app, but:
- Router VPN → all PS5 traffic goes through VPN → masked IP → DDoS absorbed
- ExpressVPN Aircove is the easiest VPN router to install (plug-and-play)
- NordVPN with Asus WRT-Merlin router: more technical setup but more flexible
This is the #1 VPN use on PS5 for creators.
Case 3 — Regional early access
Some Japanese games release 1 to 4 weeks before Europe:
- Final Fantasy timed Japan exclusives
- Monster Hunter Japan-exclusive DLC
- Persona Japanese collector editions
Method: VPN → Japan + Japanese PSN account + Japanese credit card (or gift card). Access to the Japanese version before EU release. Major constraint: Japanese language (no French/English in full Japan versions).
Case 4 — PlayStation Plus Premium cloud gaming
PS Plus Premium offers cloud gaming of PS3, PS2, PS1 games. The library varies by country:
- US PS Plus: richest catalogue
- Japan PS Plus: exclusives (Ace Combat 7 cloud, Gran Turismo HD, etc.)
- EU PS Plus: more limited
With a PS5 VPN, switching to a US or Japan PS Plus account enables access to their cloud catalogues.
Installing a VPN on PS5: the 2 methods
Method 1 — VPN on router (recommended)
Advantage: one-time setup, permanent protection, covers the whole home (PS5 + Xbox + Switch + mobiles).
Option A — Pre-configured VPN router:
- ExpressVPN Aircove — ~€200, plug-and-play, mobile app for server management
- NordVPN router: partnerships with GL.iNet, Asus
Option B — OpenVPN/WireGuard-compatible router:
- Asus (RT-AX88U, RT-AX86U, etc.) — native OpenVPN and WireGuard
- Flash AsusWRT-Merlin for better perf
- Flash OpenWrt on TP-Link / Linksys (technical)
Procedure (Asus with NordVPN WireGuard):
- Download WireGuard config from NordVPN account
- Log into router interface (192.168.1.1)
- VPN Client > Add > WireGuard > import config
- Enable
- Connect PS5 via Ethernet or Wi-Fi — traffic flows through VPN
Method 2 — PC → PS5 connection sharing
Setup:
- Windows PC with active NordVPN / ExpressVPN (Ethernet or Wi-Fi)
- Windows Settings > Network > Mobile hotspot (Wi-Fi) OR Ethernet sharing
- Connect PS5 to the Wi-Fi created by the PC (or Ethernet PC → PS5)
- PS5 inherits the PC’s VPN
Pro: no router to buy. Con: PC must stay on, potential Wi-Fi instability.
Method 3 — Smart DNS (no encryption alternative)
For unblocking only (not DDoS protection), Smart DNS is faster than VPN:
- NordVPN Smart DNS (included)
- ExpressVPN MediaStreamer
Set custom DNS on PS5 (Settings > Network > Manual config).

What NOT to do
- ❌ Rely on the Argentina/Turkey PSN hack as systematic savings — no longer viable in 2026
- ❌ Use a free VPN on router — congestion, packet loss, unplayable multi
- ❌ Buy a game via VPN without checking DLC compatibility on main account — DLC can be region-locked
- ❌ Forget to disable IPv6 on PS5 (Settings > Network) if DNS/IP leak risk
- ❌ Abuse region changes on a main PSN account — fraud suspicion, lock
Verdict
- Solo PS5, streamer DDoS: NordVPN — Meshnet bonus.
- Multi-console home, max simplicity: ExpressVPN + Aircove — 10-minute install.
- Large family tight budget: Surfshark — unlimited.
