What you need from a streaming VPN in 2026

Not all VPNs are equal for streaming. Three criteria genuinely matter:

  1. Reliable unblocking — the VPN has to refresh its IP pool quickly when Netflix or Disney+ detects it. The small services give up on this race; the big ones (NordVPN, ExpressVPN) win it.
  2. Speed sufficient for 4K — you need at least 25 Mb/s stable for 4K HDR. With a good protocol (WireGuard, Lightway, NordLynx), you keep 80-95% of your base throughput.
  3. A server network covering the right countries — at a minimum: United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Germany, France. A VPN that doesn’t cover these 6 countries is useless for serious streaming.

Why these VPNs are best for streaming

The ranking cards above show our picks at a glance. Here is the streaming-specific reasoning behind each one — focused on what decides a binge session: how reliably it unblocks, which platforms it covers, and whether it holds up in 4K.

NordVPN — the most reliable unblocker, everywhere

NordVPN unblocks every major catalogue without needing a “streaming” labelled server: in our April 2026 tests it passed Netflix US, UK, JP, CA, FR, DE, AU, IT and ES, plus Disney+ across all regions, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Max, Canal+, France.tv, TF1+, M6+, Arte.tv, DAZN, Paramount+ and Peacock. What sets it apart is how fast it cycles fresh IPs when a platform flags a server — the detection arms race that smaller providers lose. Thanks to NordLynx the throughput loss stays minimal (5-10% at short distance, 20-25% on US routes), comfortably above the threshold for 4K HDR without buffering. read our NordVPN review

CyberGhost — the no-thinking choice for non-technical homes

CyberGhost is the only VPN that labels its servers by platform. The app’s “Streaming” list hands you a Netflix US-optimised server, a BBC iPlayer-optimised UK server, a Disney+ FR server and so on — you click the platform name and it connects to a server pre-tested for it, with no trial and error. It reliably covers Netflix US, UK, JP, FR and DE on dedicated servers, plus Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Prime Video, Canal+ and France.tv. Speeds sit slightly below NordVPN but stay well clear of what 4K needs, which makes it the right pick for a household where parents, kids or grandparents just want Netflix US to work on the first try. read our CyberGhost review

Surfshark — every screen in the house at once

Surfshark unblocks every major service and allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so a single subscription covers every TV, phone, laptop and console in the home — the deciding factor for families who stream on several screens at the same time. In testing it cleared Netflix US, UK, JP, FR, DE and CA, plus Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Canal+ and France.tv. Now and then you have to try a second server in the same country to find the freshest IP, but that stays marginal and the platform coverage is consistent. read our Surfshark review

ExpressVPN — the most polished apps for TV and mobile

ExpressVPN matches NordVPN for streaming reliability and pairs it with the most intuitive apps in the comparison: you pick a country and it works, with no menu hunting — which matters most on smart-TV and mobile interfaces where a clumsy app ruins the experience. It cleared every major Netflix catalogue we tested, plus Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Canal+ and France.tv. It is the recommendation when you want the smoothest living-room and on-the-go experience and the budget is there for it. read our ExpressVPN review

Streaming coverage at a glance

This qualitative table maps platform-by-platform unblocking — the category-specific detail you will not find on the VPN cards above. It is about what each service unblocks, not scores or prices:

VPNNetflix catalogues unblockedBBC iPlayerDisney+Dedicated streaming servers
NordVPN9 (US, UK, JP, CA, FR, DE, AU, IT, ES)YesYesNo (every server works)
CyberGhost5 (US, UK, JP, FR, DE)Yes (labelled UK server)Yes (labelled server)Yes (per-platform)
Surfshark6 (US, UK, JP, FR, DE, CA)YesYesNo
ExpressVPN8 (all major)YesYesNo
Proton VPN5SometimesYesNo

If a server stops working, the fix is the same for all of them: switch to another server in the same country. A platform blocks individual IPs, not the whole network, so a second or third server almost always restores access immediately on the big providers.

Which platforms each VPN unblocks

Streaming is not one problem but a dozen, and the hard cases separate serious VPNs from the rest.

  • Netflix is the easiest of the hard platforms: every VPN in our top four unblocks the US library, and most reach the UK, Japanese, Canadian, French and German catalogues — each with a different mix of films and series, which is the whole point of switching region.
  • BBC iPlayer is the toughest mainstream target. It aggressively blocks VPN IPs, so only providers that refresh their UK pool quickly stay reliable — NordVPN, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost’s labelled iPlayer servers are the safe bets here.
  • Disney+ is moderately strict; all four top picks pass it, but regional libraries (US vs FR vs JP) differ enough to be worth switching for.
  • French platforms — Canal+, France.tv, TF1+, M6+ and Arte.tv — only need a working French server, which makes any serious VPN suitable for expats and travellers wanting home TV abroad.
  • US sports and premium — Hulu, Max, Paramount+, Peacock, DAZN — are where NordVPN and ExpressVPN pull ahead, since they hold more clean US IPs that survive the platforms’ detection.

4K, speed and buffering: what actually matters

Unblocking gets you into the catalogue; speed keeps the stream watchable. For 4K HDR you want a stable 25 Mb/s or more, and on a modern protocol — WireGuard, NordLynx or Lightway — a good VPN preserves 80-95% of your base throughput at short distance. The loss grows with physical distance to the server: streaming US Netflix from Europe routes your traffic across the Atlantic, so expect a larger drop than connecting to a neighbouring country. The practical rule: pick the closest server in the target country, prefer a WireGuard-family protocol over OpenVPN, and connect over a wired or 5 GHz connection so the VPN — not your Wi-Fi — is the limiting factor. Older OpenVPN tunnels add the most overhead and are the usual culprit behind 4K buffering, so switch protocols before blaming the VPN itself.

How to unblock Netflix US in 3 clicks

  1. Subscribe to a VPN from our top 4 (NordVPN, CyberGhost, Surfshark, ExpressVPN).
  2. Install the app and sign in.
  3. Pick a server in the United States (on CyberGhost, look directly for “Netflix US” in the Streaming list).
  4. Open Netflix — you’re automatically redirected to the US catalogue.

If Netflix displays “You seem to be using a proxy”, simply switch to another server in the same country. 9 times out of 10, a second server works immediately.

Our final recommendation

  • If you want the best overall NordVPN (fastest, unblocks everything)
  • If you’re non-technical CyberGhost (labelled servers, zero thinking required)
  • If you want the best value Surfshark (unlimited connections, every screen covered)
  • If budget isn’t a constraint ExpressVPN (most intuitive apps)

To avoid for streaming: free plans (don’t unblock Netflix), Mullvad (doesn’t try to unblock platforms) and services too small to keep their IPs ahead of the detection arms race.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best VPN for Netflix in 2026?
Based on our tests, NordVPN is the most effective for Netflix: it unblocks US, UK, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Australia and a dozen other catalogues without friction, at speeds that support 4K without buffering. CyberGhost is an excellent alternative thanks to its servers labelled by platform.
Can a free VPN unblock Netflix?
No, almost never. Free plans (including Proton VPN Free) don't grant access to Netflix or other geo-blocked services. Netflix detects and blocks free-VPN IP addresses within hours. Expect to pay at least €2-€4/month for a paid plan.
Is using a VPN to change Netflix catalogue legal?
In Europe, yes: there is no law forbidding the use of a VPN to access a foreign Netflix catalogue. However, it breaches Netflix's terms of use. In practice, Netflix simply blocks detected VPN IPs without ever penalising user accounts.
Why does my VPN no longer unblock Netflix?
Netflix regularly updates its IP blocklists. If your VPN server is detected, you see the message "You seem to be using a proxy". Solution: switch to another server in the same country (2 or 3 tries are usually enough), or contact your VPN's support to get an up-to-date server. Big VPNs like NordVPN refresh their IP pool within hours.
Which VPN for BBC iPlayer from Europe?
NordVPN and ExpressVPN are the most reliable on BBC iPlayer, which is notoriously hard to unblock. CyberGhost offers UK servers labelled "iPlayer" that work very well. Surfshark works too, though sometimes you need to try 2 servers.
Which VPN to watch Canal+ and France.tv from abroad?
Any serious VPN with servers in France works for Canal+, France.tv, TF1+, M6+ and Arte.tv. Our tests confirm that NordVPN, CyberGhost and Surfshark all pass without friction. Indispensable for expats or while travelling.
