What you need from a streaming VPN in 2026
Not all VPNs are equal for streaming. Three criteria genuinely matter:
- Reliable unblocking — the VPN has to refresh its IP pool quickly when Netflix or Disney+ detects it. The small services give up on this race; the big ones (NordVPN, ExpressVPN) win it.
- Speed sufficient for 4K — you need at least 25 Mb/s stable for 4K HDR. With a good protocol (WireGuard, Lightway, NordLynx), you keep 80-95% of your base throughput.
- A server network covering the right countries — at a minimum: United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Germany, France. A VPN that doesn’t cover these 6 countries is useless for serious streaming.
Our streaming ranking
1. NordVPN — The best for Netflix (and everything else)

Streaming score: 9.5/10
NordVPN unblocks everything, all the time, without needing a “streaming” labelled server. We tested in April 2026:
- Netflix US, UK, JP, CA, FR, DE, AU, IT, ES (9 catalogues, no friction)
- Disney+ (all regions)
- Prime Video (US, UK, FR, JP)
- BBC iPlayer
- Hulu
- Max (formerly HBO)
- Canal+, France.tv, TF1+, M6+, Arte.tv from abroad
- DAZN, Paramount+, Peacock
Thanks to NordLynx, the speed loss is minimal: 5-10% at short distance, 20-25% for the United States. 4K HDR without buffering confirmed in our tests.
Pricing: €3.09/month over 2 years.
2. CyberGhost — The simplest for non-technical users

Streaming score: 9.6/10
CyberGhost is the only VPN with servers labelled by platform. In the app, a “Streaming” list gives you: Netflix US-optimised server, BBC iPlayer-optimised server, Disney+ FR-optimised server, etc. You click, it works. Zero thinking.
- Netflix US, UK, JP, FR, DE (pre-tested dedicated servers)
- Disney+ (dedicated servers)
- BBC iPlayer (dedicated UK server)
- Hulu (dedicated US server)
- Prime Video
- Canal+, France.tv
Speeds are a little below NordVPN but more than enough for 4K. It’s the ideal choice for a non-technical household (parents, children, grandparents) who just want to watch Netflix US without hassle.
Pricing: €2.03/month over 2 years + 45-day money-back guarantee.
3. Surfshark — Unbeatable value for money

Streaming score: 9.4/10
Surfshark unblocks every major streaming service and allows unlimited connections — you can cover the whole household (computers, phones, TVs, consoles) on a single subscription.
- Netflix US, UK, JP, FR, DE, CA
- Disney+
- BBC iPlayer
- Prime Video
- Canal+, France.tv
At €2.19/month over 2 years, it’s the cheapest option among serious streaming VPNs. Occasionally you need to try 2 servers in the same country to find the right one, but it stays very marginal.
Pricing: €2.19/month over 2 years.
4. ExpressVPN — Premium, friction-free

Streaming score: 9.4/10
ExpressVPN is as reliable as NordVPN for streaming, with even more intuitive apps. You pick a country, it works. The only sticking point: the price, the highest in our comparison (€6.12/month even on a 2-year plan).
- Netflix (all major catalogues tested)
- Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu
- Canal+, France.tv
Worth recommending if budget isn’t a concern and you want the best possible mobile/TV experience.

How to unblock Netflix US in 3 clicks
- Subscribe to a VPN from our top 4 (NordVPN, CyberGhost, Surfshark, ExpressVPN).
- Install the app and sign in.
- Pick a server in the United States (on CyberGhost, look directly for “Netflix US” in the Streaming list).
- Open Netflix — you’re automatically redirected to the US catalogue.
If Netflix displays “You seem to be using a proxy”, simply switch to another server in the same country. 9 times out of 10, a second server works immediately.
Our final recommendation
- If you want the best overall → NordVPN (fastest, unblocks everything)
- If you’re non-technical → CyberGhost (labelled servers, zero thinking required)
- If you want the best price → Surfshark (€2.19/month + unlimited connections)
- If budget isn’t a constraint → ExpressVPN (most intuitive apps)
To avoid for streaming: free plans (don’t unblock Netflix), Mullvad (doesn’t try to unblock platforms) and services too small to keep their IPs ahead of the detection arms race.
