What you need from a streaming VPN in 2026

If a server stops working, the fix is the same for all of them: switch to another server in the same country. A platform blocks individual IPs, not the whole network, so a second or third server almost always restores access immediately on the big providers.

Which platforms each VPN unblocks

Streaming is not one problem but a dozen, and the hard cases separate serious VPNs from the rest.

Unblocking gets you into the catalogue; speed keeps the stream watchable. For 4K HDR you want a stable 25 Mb/s or more, and on a modern protocol — WireGuard, NordLynx or Lightway — a good VPN preserves 80-95% of your base throughput at short distance. The loss grows with physical distance to the server: streaming US Netflix from Europe routes your traffic across the Atlantic, so expect a larger drop than connecting to a neighbouring country. The practical rule: pick the closest server in the target country, prefer a WireGuard-family protocol over OpenVPN, and connect over a wired or 5 GHz connection so the VPN — not your Wi-Fi — is the limiting factor. Older OpenVPN tunnels add the most overhead and are the usual culprit behind 4K buffering, so switch protocols before blaming the VPN itself.
