NBA VPN 2026-27: what changed this season
You do not need a VPN to watch the NBA from most countries, and the NBA says VPNs are not supported. League Pass has no blackouts outside the US and Canada, the league’s new 11-year media deals put NBC, Peacock and Prime Video alongside ESPN and ABC in the US, and TNT is gone. The 2026-27 season opens on Tuesday 20 October 2026 with a three-game tripleheader on NBC and Peacock (Celtics at Pistons, 76ers at Knicks, Thunder at Spurs), as the 2026 champion Knicks raise their banner. This guide was updated on 19 October 2026.
Many pages still ranking for “NBA VPN” promise to “bypass blackouts” or to buy League Pass cheaper from another country. They predate the new media deals and ignore the NBA’s own current rules. A VPN keeps two honest uses: protecting your connection on public Wi-Fi and, carefully, reaching your own legitimate subscription while travelling.
NBA 2026-27 runs 20 October 2026 to 11 April 2027, then the Play-In (13-16 April) and the playoffs from 17 April 2027. The Finals are in June 2027, dates not yet announced.
- Blackouts only exist in the US and Canada. The NBA states that VPNs and proxies are not supported (error 7027).
- League Pass starts at $16.99 a month in the US. The old "Philippines hack" is neither guaranteed nor endorsed by the NBA.
- A VPN is mainly for protecting your Wi-Fi. Best pick: NordVPN, with no guarantee of access to any streaming service.
Before you read on. Streaming services generally forbid access from a country other than the one tied to your subscription. Using a VPN to get around a geographic restriction can breach their terms and lead to account suspension, even when it is not illegal in itself. No service is guaranteed to work with a VPN: platforms regularly block VPN addresses. We link to no pirate streaming sites and do not recommend any.
When does the 2026-27 NBA season start and what are the key dates?
The regular season runs from 20 October 2026 to 11 April 2027. Dates below come from the NBA’s official key dates page (updated 18.10.2026) and its 13.08.2026 schedule announcement. UK times follow the Sky Sports schedule.

Who broadcasts the NBA in 2026-27, country by country?
Checked on 19 October 2026 against official NBA pages and dated press. Rights can change: confirm on the service’s page before paying. 2026-27 is the second season of the 11-year agreements (through 2035-36) with Disney (ESPN and ABC), NBCUniversal (NBC and Peacock) and Amazon (Prime Video).

USA: ESPN, NBC, Prime Video
According to NBA.com (13.08.2026), the season has 80 games on ABC and ESPN, 100 on NBC, Peacock and NBCSN and 66 on Prime Video. The TNT deal has ended: TNT and TBS no longer show the NBA.
- Monday: Peacock and NBCSN. Tuesday: NBC and Peacock. Wednesday: ESPN. Thursday (from midseason): Prime Video. Friday: Prime Video, joined by ESPN from midseason. Saturday: Prime Video in the afternoon, ABC and ESPN at night. Sunday: ABC and ESPN, then NBC and Peacock.
- 2027 playoffs: ESPN and NBC carry games in the first two rounds, Prime Video has the whole Play-In and the Eastern Conference Finals, ESPN has the Western Conference Finals and ABC has the Finals.
- Prices found: ESPN Unlimited $31.99 a month (ESPN pricing page, 05.10.2026), Peacock Premium $12.99 a month, Amazon Prime $14.99 a month (NBC News, 19.10.2026), League Pass from $16.99 a month (Yahoo Sports, 19.10.2026). About 75 games air free on ABC and NBC, so an antenna covers those (Stuff, 09.10.2026).
UK and Ireland: Sky Sports and Prime Video
Sky Sports lists up to 130 live regular-season games, the playoffs and the 2027 Finals (Sky Sports, 19.10.2026). A NOW Sports pass gives access without a contract. Prime Video has 67 confirmed games plus 20 primetime games still to be announced, exclusivity on the Manchester Game, the Cup knockout rounds and the Eastern Conference Finals, all included in Amazon Prime (Stuff, 09.10.2026). League Pass has no blackouts in the UK. We could not verify the Irish rights in detail.
Canada
The NBA’s blackout guide names Sportsnet, TSN, CTV, RDS and Prime Video for nationally broadcast games. We could not verify current Canadian League Pass or channel prices, so we give none.
France, Germany, Spain, Italy
- France: Prime Video (second season; 86 regular-season games, Play-In, Cup knockouts, one conference final, Paris and Manchester games; included in a 6.99 euro a month Prime plan) and beIN SPORTS (from 15 euros a month; up to nine games a week, the All-Star Game and the 2027 Finals) according to Sport Buzz Business (19.10.2026). Canal+ is not listed as an NBA broadcaster (some Canal+ Sport plans bundle beIN SPORTS, per TV-Direct, which does not make Canal+ an NBA rights holder).
- Germany: Prime Video (66 to 67 games and the Eastern Conference Finals), Sky and WOW (opening night, All-Star Weekend and the Western Conference Finals; the 2027 Finals split is not confirmed) and League Pass for everything. No regular-season game on free TV (Spox, 11.10.2026). DAZN is no longer listed as an NBA broadcaster there.
- Spain: DAZN replaces Movistar+ (Christmas, MLK Day, one conference final and the 2027 Finals), Prime Video keeps the Play-In, the Cup and one conference final (Gigantes del Basket, 12.10.2026).
- Italy: Sky Sport Basket and NOW (live and exclusive 2027 Finals, per Sportcal) and Prime Video (67 games, Play-In, Eastern Conference Finals, Paris and Manchester).
Philippines
Local press puts Prime Video from 149 pesos a month. We found no dated, reliable 2026-27 League Pass price for the Philippines, so we give none.
How much does NBA League Pass cost in 2026-27?
The official NBA page shows different prices depending on your location. In the US, Yahoo Sports (19.10.2026) lists League Pass from $16.99 a month. We could not confirm a US season price on an official page, so we give none. Read from a French connection on 19-20 October 2026, the official page shows:

Both plans allow up to 4 games at once and cover the regular season, Play-In, playoffs and Finals (outside US and Canada blackouts). Season plans run through September and auto-renew, with an email 30 days before the charge.
Simple maths: over 8 months (October to May), monthly Standard in France costs 175.92 euros (8 x 21.99) against 146.99 euros for the season, about 29 euros less. On Premium it is 231.92 against 199.99, about 32 euros less. The old “$199 in the US” figure from the previous version of this article no longer matches current pricing.
Does League Pass have blackouts, and does a VPN get around them?
According to the NBA’s official blackout guide (updated 06.10.2026), blackouts apply only in the US and Canada. In every other country, every game is available live on League Pass.

The NBA sets blackouts by the location of the device, identified through its IP address or location services if they are on. A VPN changes your IP address, not necessarily a phone’s GPS position.
More importantly, the NBA publishes a Help Center page on error 7027 (updated 13.09.2026). It says its systems detect a VPN, proxy or other setup that masks your location, that VPNs and proxies are not supported and that content may fail to load. Its first instruction is to turn the VPN or proxy off, then clear the cache, try another browser or platform and restart the router; if the error persists without a VPN, contact support. Sites claiming a VPN “bypasses all blackouts” are making commercial claims: no result is guaranteed.
The sanctioned route for a blacked-out game is the one the NBA lists: the national broadcaster (ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock or Prime Video in the US; Sportsnet, TSN, CTV, RDS or Prime Video in Canada) or the replay.
Can a VPN get you NBA League Pass cheaper?
This is a widely repeated trick: buy League Pass in a cheaper country, the Philippines first. Prices do differ between countries, but here is why we no longer lay out the method.
- The NBA does not support it. It states that VPNs and proxies are not supported and says it detects them. Subscribing under a false location can breach its terms and put the subscription at risk of suspension.
- Local payment is a hurdle. Several guides mention needing a card issued in that country. Entering a false address at sign-up is not a detail: it is inaccurate information given to a paid service, and we do not encourage it.
- Prices move. The “$99 to $120 a season in the Philippines” figure that circulates could not be found on a dated source. Read current prices on the official page from your own country.
Savings that are safe: pay for the season rather than month by month (about 29 euros less on Standard in France), use Prime Video if the games it carries are enough, subscribe only for the months that matter (17 April to June for the playoffs), or, if you are a student, check the discount shown on the official page (up to 40% in eligible markets, conditions to verify).
How can you watch the NBA for free, legally?
The honest answer: not in most countries. No official source mentions free-to-air regular-season games in France or Germany for 2026-27 (Spox, 11.10.2026). In the US, about 75 games air on ABC and NBC over the air, so an antenna works (Stuff, 09.10.2026); everything else needs ESPN, Peacock, Prime Video or League Pass.
The old tips in this article (a “free game a day”, YouTube TV or ESPN+ trials through a US VPN) were removed: we could not find them on a dated 2026-27 official source, ESPN’s current offer is called ESPN Unlimited ($31.99 a month, ESPN page of 05.10.2026), and opening a US account behind a VPN to get a trial can breach the service terms. To cut the bill, check whether Amazon offers a Prime trial on your account instead.
Avoid pirate “NBA live” streaming sites: malware, fraudulent redirects and aggressive ads are common, and a VPN does not protect you from malware you download yourself.
When is a VPN actually useful for the NBA?
Scenario 1: you watch on public or hotel Wi-Fi
A VPN encrypts your traffic between your device and the VPN server. This is the strongest use: protecting your Prime Video, Sky, NOW or NBA logins. Turn on a kill switch too.
Scenario 2: you travel with a League Pass subscription
The NBA says League Pass works in any supported country, whatever country you bought it in (Help Center, 12.10.2026; re-read it on the official page before you travel). The catch is the blackout rules of the country you visit: in the US or Canada, local and national games are blocked on League Pass. A VPN back home is neither supported nor guaranteed.
Scenario 3: you travel in Europe with a European subscription
EU Regulation 2017/1128, applicable since 1 April 2018, requires paid online content services to stay accessible during a temporary stay in another EU country, at no extra cost and with no quality drop. Paid services from an EU provider, such as Prime Video or beIN SPORTS in France, should fall under this framework in principle (check each service’s conditions). You do not need a VPN for that. It does not apply to the UK after Brexit or to other non-EU countries.
Scenario 4: you want the playoffs in 4K on a TV

Checklist before the 2027 playoffs
- Pick your subscription: ESPN, Peacock, Prime Video, Sky Sports or League Pass depending on your country. For the playoffs, check the conference finals split before 17 April 2027.
- Note the League Pass renewal date (email 30 days before the charge) so you do not pay for a season you will not use.
- Turn the VPN on only for untrusted networks, with the kill switch.
- Switch the VPN off to watch League Pass if error 7027 appears, as the NBA asks.
- Use a password manager for your streaming accounts.
What NOT to do
- Pirate “NBA live” streaming sites: malware and scams.
- A free VPN to watch a paid subscription: blocked addresses and data collection.
- Giving a false address or location to get a foreign price.
- Switching the purchase country repeatedly: it draws the service’s attention.
- Paying for several services without comparing: League Pass already covers every game outside blackout areas.
Verdict: how to stream the NBA in 2026-27
