Which VPN to choose for Portugal in 2026?
NordVPN is the best VPN for Portugal in 2026: fast Lisbon servers, tested unblocking on RTP Play, SIC, TVI Player, OPTO, Canal 11 (football). Proton VPN is the privacy alternative: Swiss jurisdiction, audited open-source apps, from €4.49/month. Surfshark offers the best price with unlimited connections — ideal for the vast Portuguese diaspora abroad.
Portugal combines major tourist/retirement destination, very rich media (RTP, SIC, TVI, OPTO) and massive Lusophone diaspora. A VPN covers three profiles: expats/tourists, diaspora, and football fans (Benfica, Porto, Sporting).
Why a VPN is useful for Portugal
Case 1 — You’re in the Portuguese diaspora abroad
- RTP Play — free public TV (RTP1, RTP2, RTP3, RTP África)
- SIC and SIC Notícias — first private channel, news
- TVI Player — second private channel, novelas, variety
- OPTO — SIC premium streaming (exclusive series, Portuguese films, concerts)
- Canal 11 (SIC) — Liga Portugal football
- Sport TV — premium sport
- Portuguese banks (Caixa Geral, Millennium BCP, Santander PT, Novo Banco, Bankinter)
- Worten, Fnac Portugal, Continente — e-commerce
- MB Way — Portuguese mobile payment
Case 2 — You’re a foreign expat or retiree in Portugal
Major expat communities in Lisbon, Porto, Algarve, Madeira:
- Keep access to home streaming (BBC iPlayer, Netflix US, France.tv) from Porto, Lisbon, Faro
- Home banking from PT — avoid blocks
- Public Wi-Fi well secured but VPN adds a layer
- Home country services — residents often need home tax navigation
Case 3 — You travel to Portugal
Portugal = major tourist destination (Lisbon, Porto, Algarve, Madeira, Azores, Douro):
- Airport (LIS, OPO) and hotel Wi-Fi to secure
- Access to home services from PT
- Home credit card secured on public Wi-Fi
Case 4 — You’re a Portuguese football fan
The Portuguese Primeira Liga has massive international following. Benfica, Porto, Sporting + national team (Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva).
- Canal 11 (SIC) broadcasts most matches
- Sport TV for premium sport
- With Lisbon VPN, you access everything
The 3 criteria that matter for Portugal
1. Servers in Lisbon (+ ideally Porto)
For a Portuguese IP. NordVPN and Surfshark both have Lisbon servers.
2. Speed (excellent PT fibre)
Excellent infrastructure in Portugal. NordLynx maintains 85-95% throughput.
3. OPTO and Canal 11 unblocking
OPTO and Canal 11 have moderate VPN detection. Our top 3 passes, avoid small VPNs.
Which VPNs really have a Portugal server?
Portugal is one of the easy cases. As an EU member with solid data centres in Lisbon, it hosts genuine physical servers for almost every major provider, so getting a Portuguese IP is never the hard part. The real differentiator is which ones keep unblocking the stricter platforms — OPTO and Canal 11 detect datacenter IPs more aggressively than free RTP Play.
| VPN | Portugal location | Physical or virtual | Unblocks OPTO / Canal 11 |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Lisbon | Physical | tested |
| CyberGhost | Lisbon (streaming-labelled) | Physical | Yes |
| Surfshark | Lisbon + Porto | Physical | Yes |
| ExpressVPN | Lisbon | Physical | Yes |
| Proton VPN | Lisbon | Physical | RTP / SIC |
| PureVPN | Lisbon | Physical | RTP / SIC |
| Mullvad | Lisbon | Physical | not streaming-focused |
One nuance worth knowing: under the EU’s cross-border portability rule, if you already subscribe to a Portuguese service you can sometimes reach some RTP Play content from elsewhere in the EU without a VPN. But premium content — Liga Portugal on Canal 11, recent OPTO series and films — stays geo-locked, which is exactly where a Lisbon server earns its place for the diaspora.
Which fits your use case?
- Following Liga Portugal on Canal 11 / Sport TV NordVPN. It is the steadiest against the stricter detection on premium football, with fast Lisbon servers and 10 connections for a family spread across France, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
- Maximum privacy Proton VPN. Swiss jurisdiction outside the 14 Eyes, audited open-source apps, 30-day money-back guarantee: the safest everyday pick.
- A whole multi-generation household Surfshark. Unlimited connections so parents, grandparents and kids abroad all watch RTP Play, SIC and TVI on one plan.
Is a VPN legal in Portugal?
Yes, completely. No Portuguese law forbids VPN use, and as an EU member Portugal applies the same open-internet rules as the rest of the bloc. Individuals, remote workers and the many expats retiring in the Algarve or Lisbon use them daily to keep home banking and home streaming working. Only illegal actions carried out through a VPN remain illegal (piracy, fraud) — the tool itself is perfectly lawful.
Is a free VPN enough for Portugal?
For light browsing on a café Wi-Fi, perhaps. For OPTO, Canal 11 or live Liga Portugal, no. The free apps that fill the stores (Urban VPN and clones) cap your data, throttle HD streams and are detected by the stricter Portuguese platforms almost immediately; the worst ones log and resell your traffic. Proton VPN’s free tier is the honest exception for privacy, but it does not include a Portuguese server and will not unblock RTP premium content. Since every paid plan we recommend refunds within 30 days, that money-back window is the safer way to “try for free”.
Portugal VPN on mobile (iPhone, Android, APK)
Most of the diaspora watches Portuguese TV on a phone or a TV box, so the app experience matters:
- iPhone / Android — install from the App Store or Google Play (avoid stray APKs), connect to Lisbon, then open the RTP Play, OPTO or TVI Player app. All work once you hold a Portuguese IP.
- Android TV / Apple TV / Fire TV — Surfshark ships native TV apps with Lisbon servers, ideal for watching Benfica, Porto or Sporting on the big screen abroad.
- If a stream blocks — OPTO and Canal 11 sometimes flag a datacenter IP; switch to another Lisbon (or Porto) server and reload, which clears it in most cases.
How to watch RTP Play from abroad
- Subscribe to NordVPN or Surfshark, install the app.
- Connect to a Lisbon server.
- Open rtp.pt/play — free streaming, no account required for most content.
- Watch novelas, news, Telejornal, Donos Disto Tudo.
Setting up the VPN for Portugal travel or retirement
- Install before departure.
- Enable the kill switch.
- Add home country and Portugal as favourites.
- For home streaming from Porto: home-country server.
- For RTP Play from abroad: Lisbon server.
- On public Wi-Fi (Algarve hotels, Lisbon cafés): VPN active.
What NOT to do
- Use a free VPN for OPTO or Canal 11 — blocked
- Log into your home bank without VPN from Porto
- Confuse RTP Play (free) and OPTO (paid, premium)
- Ignore Canal 11 if football fan — it’s THE official Liga Portugal broadcaster

- The privacy pick: Proton VPN: rated 9.2, Swiss jurisdiction, €4.49/month, 30-day money-back guarantee.
