Which VPN to choose for Egypt in 2026?

NordVPN is the best VPN for Egypt in 2026: obfuscated servers to bypass the 2018 cybercrime law, tested unblocking on Mada Masr, HuffPost Arabic, Skype and access to Egyptian channels. ExpressVPN is the most reliable alternative. Surfshark offers the best price with unlimited connections.

Egypt practices extensive censorship since the 2018 law: more than 500 sites blocked, independent media targeted (Mada Masr), VoIP sometimes throttled. For foreign expats in Egypt, the Egyptian diaspora abroad and travellers, a VPN has become essential.

The Internet context in Egypt

Egypt experienced a major crackdown since 2018. Timeline:

  • 2017: 21 sites blocked, including Mada Masr and Huffington Post Arabic
  • August 2018: cybercrime law — grants government wide blocking and surveillance powers
  • 2019-2020: Signal blocked at times, Skype throttled
  • 2022: Fratelli Italia tensions (Giulio Regeni visa), increased blocks
  • 2024: new wave of blocks during elections

Currently blocked sites (non-exhaustive):

  • Independent media: Mada Masr, HuffPost Arabic, some al-Jazeera sites
  • Political opposition: Muslim Brotherhood sites, banned parties
  • LGBTQ+: fully blocked
  • Online betting: blocked
  • Some free VPNs: blocked by ISPs (Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, Orange Egypt)
  • Human rights sites: Human Rights Watch (partially), some Amnesty reports

Consequence: for a journalist, activist, researcher or regular citizen wanting access to independent media, a VPN with obfuscation has become the daily tool.

Why a VPN is useful for Egypt

Case 1 — You’re in Egypt (expat, resident, traveller)

  • Access to independent media (Mada Masr, opposition)
  • Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp call — sometimes throttled, VPN stabilises
  • Public Wi-Fi (Cairo/Hurghada airports, Luxor hotels, Sharm el-Sheikh) rarely secure
  • Keep access to home streaming (BBC iPlayer, Netflix US) from Cairo, Alexandria
  • Home banking from Egypt

Case 2 — You’re abroad (Egyptian diaspora)

  • ERTU, ON, DMC, CBC Egypt, MBC Masr — Egyptian channels
  • Watch iT! — local streaming platform
  • Shahid — MBC/Arabic content
  • Egyptian bank (CIB, Banque Misr, NBE, QNB Alahli) — access from abroad
  • Shopping on Jumia Egypt, Noon Egypt

Case 3 — You’re a journalist, researcher in Egypt

At-risk context (see Regeni case). Obfuscation + kill switch + no-log + jurisdiction outside Egyptian pressure mandatory. NordVPN (Panama) and ExpressVPN (BVI) standards.

Case 4 — You’re travelling to Egypt (tourism)

More than 15 million tourists per year (Pyramids, Nile, Red Sea):

  • Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada resort Wi-Fi — rarely secure
  • Access to home services (bank, streaming)

The 3 criteria that matter for Egypt

1. Obfuscation (2018 law criterion)

Egyptian ISPs (Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, Orange Egypt) apply DPI. Obfuscated Servers (NordVPN), Lightway Stealth (ExpressVPN), Camouflage (Surfshark) guarantee stability.

2. Jurisdiction outside pressure

NordVPN (Panama), ExpressVPN (BVI), Surfshark (Netherlands) — all well placed.

3. Fast regional servers

Turkey, UAE, nearby Europe. All three cover well.

Which VPNs really have an Egypt server?

This is the single most important point for Egypt, and most comparisons get it wrong. Almost no provider runs physical hardware in Egypt — local hosting is limited and politically sensitive — so the Egypt locations you see in VPN apps are virtual servers: the IP address is Egyptian, but the machine itself sits in a nearby country. For reaching ON, DMC, CBC Egypt or your Egyptian bank from abroad, a virtual Egyptian server works exactly like a physical one.

VPNEgypt locationPhysical or virtualEgyptian IP
NordVPNNo Egypt location(used to bypass, not to get an Egyptian IP)
ExpressVPNCairoVirtualYes
SurfsharkCairo (~4 servers)VirtualYes
CyberGhostCairo (large fleet)VirtualYes
Proton VPNCairo (~17 servers)VirtualYes
MullvadNoNo

Two different jobs, don’t confuse them. Getting out of Egypt’s filtering (reaching Mada Masr, stabilising VoIP, browsing freely) is about obfuscation and a reliable nearby server — that’s where NordVPN shines even though it has no Egyptian IP. Getting an Egyptian IP from abroad (watching ON/DMC, reaching your Egyptian bank) needs a provider with an Egypt location — and those are virtual: ExpressVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, Proton VPN. Pick by which job you actually need.

What “virtual server” means: the provider advertises an Egyptian IP but routes you through a physical server in a nearby country. It’s standard practice where local hosting is risky, it’s not a downside for everyday use, and it often means faster, safer speeds than a monitored local data centre. The one thing it can’t do is prove physical presence in Egypt — which, given the surveillance climate, is arguably an advantage.

Which fits your Egypt use case?

  • Inside Egypt, bypassing censorship and DPI NordVPN. Its Obfuscated Servers disguise VPN traffic as ordinary HTTPS, which is the feature that matters against the deep-packet-inspection run by Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and Orange Egypt — and the one most likely to keep working if a network actively interferes. It has no Egyptian IP, but inside Egypt that’s not what you need.
  • Journalists, researchers and sensitive profiles ExpressVPN. Automatic Lightway Stealth obfuscation plus TrustedServer (RAM-only, nothing written to disk and nothing to seize) and BVI jurisdiction — the setup you want in an at-risk context like the one the Regeni case illustrates. It also has a virtual Cairo server if you separately need an Egyptian IP.
  • A family or the diaspora wanting Egyptian TV Surfshark. Its virtual Cairo location gives an Egyptian IP for ON, DMC and CBC Egypt, Camouflage Mode plays the obfuscation role for restriction-prone networks, and unlimited connections cover everyone’s devices on one plan.

Setting up the VPN in Egypt

  1. Install the VPN before departure — VPN sites sometimes slow from Egypt.
  2. Enable obfuscation.
  3. Enable the kill switch (important against the 2018 law).
  4. Add home country, Turkey, UAE as favourites.
  5. On hotel/resort Wi-Fi: VPN systematically.

What NOT to do

  • Use a free VPN — many blocked by ISPs
  • Publish regime-critical content — the 2018 law sanctions this
  • Disable the VPN to load a blocked site — better to switch server
  • Ignore the kill switch — leak = alert

This is genuinely a grey area, unlike most countries — so it’s worth being precise. Personal VPN use is not explicitly banned in Egypt, and millions of Egyptians, expats and tourists use one daily without incident. But the 2018 cybercrime law does criminalise using a VPN specifically to access content the state has blocked, with penalties on paper of up to two years in prison.

In practice, enforcement is selective: prosecutions target journalists, activists and high-profile critics, not ordinary people watching Netflix, calling family on WhatsApp or reaching their bank. The realistic risks for a regular user are minimal. The sensible posture is therefore (1) keep obfuscation on so VPN use isn’t obvious to your ISP’s DPI, (2) keep the kill switch on so nothing leaks, and (3) don’t publish state-critical content under your real identity even with a VPN — the law punishes the content, and a VPN tunnel is never a guarantee of anonymity. For streaming, VoIP and privacy on public Wi-Fi, you’re in the tolerated zone.

Is a free VPN enough for Egypt?

No — Egypt is one of the worst places to rely on a free VPN. Many free apps are themselves blocked by Egyptian ISPs (Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, Orange Egypt), most lack the obfuscation you need to slip past DPI, and the cheapest ones log and monetise your traffic — exactly the wrong trade-off in a surveillance-heavy country. They also cap data far below HD streaming needs. Proton VPN’s free tier is the one trustworthy exception for basic browsing, but its free plan has no obfuscation and no Egypt location. Because paid plans refund within 30 days, a cancellable paid plan with obfuscated servers is the only safe “free trial” here.

Egypt VPN on mobile (iPhone, Android, APK)

Most Egyptians browse and call on a phone, and mobile is exactly where VoIP throttling and site blocks bite hardest:

  • Install before you need it — set the app up while you still have unrestricted internet, ideally before flying in, because VPN download pages can be slow or blocked from inside Egypt.
  • Android — install from Google Play, never a side-loaded APK; fake “VPN Egypt free” APKs are a common malware and data-harvesting route.
  • iPhone / iPad — App Store install, then enable obfuscation in settings before connecting.
  • Enable obfuscation on mobile too — NordVPN Obfuscated Servers, ExpressVPN automatic Lightway Stealth, Surfshark Camouflage Mode — so your mobile carrier’s DPI doesn’t flag the tunnel.
  • Keep the VPN on for calls — WhatsApp, Skype and Zoom voice/video have been throttled historically; leaving the tunnel up keeps them stable.

Verdict: which VPN for Egypt in 2026?

  • Best for bypassing censorship: NordVPN — Obfuscated Servers vs DPI, Panama jurisdiction (no Egyptian IP, but that’s not what you need inside Egypt).
  • Most reliable for sensitive profiles: ExpressVPN — automatic Lightway Stealth + RAM-only TrustedServer, plus a virtual Cairo server for an Egyptian IP.
  • Best for Egyptian TV + family: Surfshark — virtual Cairo location, Camouflage Mode, unlimited connections.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best VPN for Egypt in 2026?
NordVPN is the best VPN for Egypt in 2026, with obfuscated servers to bypass filters and tested unblocking of independent media (Mada Masr), Skype, and blocked content. ExpressVPN is the most reliable alternative. Surfshark remains the best price with unlimited connections.
What does Egypt block?
Egypt has intensified censorship since the 2018 cybercrime law. More than 500 sites blocked: Mada Masr (main independent media), HuffPost Arabic, al-Jazeera (at times), regime-critical media, LGBTQ+ sites, VPNs (some), betting sites. Skype and Zoom have been historically throttled/blocked.
What is Egypt's 2018 cybercrime law?
A law that came into force in August 2018 giving Egyptian authorities the power to block any site deemed 'threatening national security', sanction social network users with more than 5,000 followers (classified as 'media'), and punish VPNs used to bypass blocks. In practice, prosecutions target journalists and activists, rarely individuals.
Does any VPN have a real server in Egypt?
Almost none run physical hardware in Egypt. Surfshark, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Proton VPN offer an Egypt location, but these are virtual servers — you get an Egyptian IP while the machine sits in a nearby country. NordVPN has no Egypt location at all; for Egypt it's used to get out (bypass censorship) via its obfuscated servers, not to get an Egyptian IP. For everyday use a virtual Egyptian server reaches ON, DMC, CBC Egypt and your Egyptian bank exactly like a physical one.
How to watch Egyptian channels (ON, DMC, CBC Egypt) from abroad?
Subscribe to a VPN with an Egypt location (Surfshark or ExpressVPN — virtual servers), connect to it, then open on.eg, dmc.com.eg or cbc-eg.com. You access ON, DMC, CBC Egypt, MBC Masr and national television (ERTU). A virtual Egyptian IP works fine for this; the IP is Egyptian even though the hardware sits nearby.
Which Egyptian platforms require a VPN?
ERTU (Egyptian Radio and Television public), ON, DMC, CBC Egypt, MBC Masr, Watch iT! (Egyptian streaming platform), Shahid (MBC Arabic content), Vodafone TV Egypt. Banks: CIB, Banque Misr, National Bank of Egypt, QNB Alahli.
Is a VPN legal in Egypt?
Personal VPN use is not explicitly forbidden but the 2018 law sanctions its use to bypass blocks (up to 2 years in prison). In practice, millions of Egyptians use VPNs daily. Prosecutions target activists and journalists — rarely individuals watching Netflix or calling family.
