Zone Téléchargement in 2026: current situation
Zone Téléchargement, one of the oldest and most visited French-language direct-download directories, has had a turbulent path since launching in 2010: court-ordered shutdowns, convictions of its founders, dozens of mirror domains, and an additional judicial block issued in early 2026.
What you need to know:
- Zone Téléchargement is illegal: it indexes direct-download links (films, series, music, games, software, ebooks) hosted on third-party platforms, without rights holder authorisation
- The site has no stable address: the Paris judicial court ordered the blocking of Zone-Téléchargement and 8 other pirate sites on March 26, 2026
- Its founders have already been convicted: two Toulouse-based administrators sentenced in 2023 to 18 months in prison (12 suspended) and a €50,000 fine
- Mirrors are dangerous: piracy sites are regularly used to spread active malware
- Legal alternatives exist for nearly all of its catalogue, often for free
This guide covers Zone Téléchargement’s history, the successive blocks, the real risks (legal, malware, and the important difference between direct download and peer-to-peer in the eyes of Hadopi/ARCOM), and above all how to get the same content for free and legally.
Zone Téléchargement is illegal, blocked by court order and has no stable address; its founders have already been convicted, and its 2026 mirrors remain traps for malware and scams.
- A VPN doesn't make it legal - downloading a protected work still risks Hadopi/ARCOM fines.
- Its whole catalogue (films, series, music, games, software, ebooks) is legally available, often free: Internet Archive, GOG.com, Bandcamp, Gallica, itch.io.
- If you go anyway, at least run NordVPN Threat Protection (or Surfshark CleanWeb), and never run a downloaded file without scanning it first.
What Zone Téléchargement is: history and catalogue
Zone Téléchargement launched in March 2010. Despite what its name sometimes suggests, the site never hosted files itself: it works as a directory of direct-download (DDL) links, pointing to third-party hosts like 1fichier, Uptobox or Turbobit. This architecture long made it one of the most visited piracy sites in France.
Typical catalogue
- Recent and older films, in HD/4K on current mirrors
- Complete series, updated as episodes air
- Music, often in FLAC format
- PC and console games
- Software and ebooks/magazines
Its audience peaked between 2013 and 2016: roughly 3.5 million unique visitors in May 2015, and the 11th most-visited site in France in March 2016. The economic damage to rights holders was estimated at the time at around €75 million (a figure reported by trade press, best read as an order of magnitude).
ARCOM blocking and the successive shutdowns
Zone Téléchargement suffered several major setbacks, well before ARCOM even existed:
- November 28, 2016: French gendarmerie seize two servers and hold three people in custody in Toulouse. The site is down for less than 24 hours, then reappears, but links stay broken (DL-Protect, used to protect links, is offline at the time).
- August 2017: a clone presenting itself as “legal” relaunches activity, notably hosting film posters via the Centre national du cinéma (CNC, the French national cinema centre). The CNC and several film industry organisations demand its closure again as soon as December 15, 2017.
- 2023: the site’s two Toulouse-based founders are sentenced to 18 months in prison (12 suspended) and a €50,000 fine after a lengthy investigation.
- August 5, 2023: Uptobox, one of the file hosts most used by Zone Téléchargement mirrors, is seized by Europol and ceases operations, further weakening the French-language direct-download ecosystem.
- January 29, 2026: several film industry organisations formally notify the main French ISPs.
- March 26, 2026: the Paris judicial court orders Orange, Free, SFR and Bouygues Télécom to block 29 domain names and their variants, tied to Zone-Téléchargement and 8 other pirate sites (Moiflix, Noctaflix…), for 18 months across French territory. ISPs have 15 days to comply.
Since the law of October 25, 2021, ARCOM can extend a court-ordered block to mirror domains that appear afterwards, without going back before a judge. As a result, the site has changed domain name dozens of times since 2016 (extensions .ws, .cool, .cam, .click, .cfd, .lol, .estate, .shop, .al…), with each new address usually lasting only a few weeks before being blocked in turn. No Zone-Téléchargement address is stable in 2026.
Why Zone Téléchargement is dangerous today
Malware risks
Like other major French-language piracy sites, current Zone Téléchargement mirrors are saturated with traps:
- Persistent pop-ups redirecting to illegal gambling sites
- Fake download buttons that actually trigger the installation of an unwanted executable
- Password-protected compressed files, whose “password” page is actually an ad trap or a phishing site
- JavaScript cryptominers massively slowing down your browsing
- Fake Windows/Mac warnings asking you to call a “support” line
Piracy sites regularly contain active malware. An unprotected user who runs a downloaded file without scanning it can end up with ransomware encrypting all their personal documents.
Direct download or peer-to-peer: what actually changes for your IP
Despite what its name sometimes suggests, Zone Téléchargement was never a BitTorrent tracker: it’s a direct-download (DDL) site, redirecting to hosts like 1fichier or Uptobox. This technical nuance concretely changes your level of exposure:
- With direct download, your IP address passes through the file’s host and your own internet provider. It is not visible to other users downloading the same file at the same time.
- With peer-to-peer (P2P/BitTorrent), by contrast, your IP is directly visible to every other participant in the network during the download, since you receive and send file fragments to other users simultaneously. This is precisely the mechanism that Hadopi, then ARCOM, have monitored since 2010 to identify downloaders: companies hired by rights holders join P2P swarms, collect the IP addresses publicly visible there, then pass them on for identification through ISPs.
Many “best download sites” rankings (the kind of search that leads to this article) mix, without saying so, DDL directories like Zone Téléchargement with genuine torrent trackers. On the latter, your IP exposure is immediate and public, with no court procedure needed for a third party to see it. A VPN masks your IP in both cases, from the DDL host and your ISP as well as inside a P2P swarm, but it makes neither of them legal.
Notable fact: on April 30, 2026, France’s Conseil d’État (highest administrative court) ruled illegal the harshest part of the Hadopi/ARCOM graduated response, namely the automatic referral to the prosecutor after two ignored warnings, after 17 years of primarily targeting P2P. This ruling doesn’t remove the rest of the system and doesn’t make illegal downloading legal: rights holders keep pursuing civil proceedings (like the March 2026 block targeting Zone-Téléchargement itself) and criminal ones (like the 2023 conviction of its founders). In 2025, ARCOM still issued 79,188 first warnings and referred 1,338 cases to the courts.
Legal risks
The Intellectual Property Code provides the same sanctions as for illegal streaming sites:
- Fine up to €300,000 for infringement
- 3 years in prison in serious cases
- €1,500 Hadopi/ARCOM fine in simplified procedure
- €7,500 for using a blocked site
Rights holders (SACEM, ALPA, APP, SFA) have stepped up prosecutions since 2023, with convictions now reaching site administrators themselves, as the Zone Téléchargement case shows.
What are the best legal alternatives to Zone Téléchargement?
Good news: most of what Zone Téléchargement offers (films, series, music, games, software, ebooks) is legally available elsewhere, often for free.
Our ranking: the best legal download platforms

- The Internet Archive (archive.org): a non-profit digital library with tens of thousands of public-domain films and documentaries, plus millions of older books and pieces of software, all free and direct to download.
- GOG.com: the reference for DRM-free PC games. Once bought, a game installs and can be downloaded as many times as needed, with no online launcher required. A very extensive “Good Old Games” catalogue, with frequent sales.
- Bandcamp: a music download platform that passes a significant share of revenue directly to artists. Many independent albums are available “pay what you want”, sometimes for free.
- Gallica (French National Library): millions of public-domain books, newspapers, periodicals and manuscripts, digitised and free to download as PDFs.
- itch.io: the indie equivalent of GOG, with thousands of games, often free or pay-what-you-want, downloadable directly and DRM-free.
- Epic Games Store: a free PC game every week (yours to keep once claimed), on top of its paid catalogue.
- Qobuz: a French music service offering legal high-definition downloads (FLAC), sold per track, per album, or via subscription.
- Official free software: LibreOffice, GIMP, VLC, 7-Zip, downloaded only from the publisher’s own site, never from a third-party site that repackages the installer with malware.
To watch films and series without downloading anything
If your use of Zone Téléchargement was mostly about watching films and series, free legal streaming covers most of it with no files to manage: Molotov TV and France.tv (French channels, free), Pluto TV (free on-demand catalogue with ads), ARTE (art cinema and documentaries, free), Tubi (huge US catalogue, via VPN) and Netflix with ads (from €7.99/mo) for new releases. Full details in our free legal streaming guide.
If you go anyway
This isn’t our recommendation. But if you go anyway:
1. A VPN with active Threat Protection
NordVPN and its Threat Protection feature automatically block:
- Known malware domains
- Malicious advertising pop-ups
- Cryptominer scripts
- Phishing redirects
With Surfshark, the CleanWeb function does the same job. It’s an essential layer of protection if you frequent dubious sites, but it fixes neither the legal risk nor the risk of the files you go on to download.
2. Never run a downloaded file without scanning it
Unlike streaming, direct download means you actually fetch and run real files on your machine: that’s an extra risk. Always run every file (executable, archive, installer) through an up-to-date antivirus before opening it, and be especially wary of password-protected archives whose “password” is handed out on a third-party page full of ads.
3. An aggressive ad blocker
uBlock Origin with active filters (EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Fanboy’s Annoyance List) blocks 80-90% of malicious pop-ups.
4. A dedicated browser
Never use the same browser as your banking, Google, or social network accounts. Use a separate browser, in private mode, logged out of everything.
To go further
Legal downloading and streaming have progressed enormously in 2026. Public-domain films and books (Internet Archive, Gallica), DRM-free games (GOG.com, itch.io), music that pays artists (Bandcamp, Qobuz), and free French channels (Molotov, France.tv) cover most of what Zone Téléchargement was used for, without legal risk or malware.
