Champions League 2026-27 with a VPN: the short answer

In the UK, the 2026-27 Champions League is on TNT Sports (HBO Max) and Amazon Prime Video, with BBC highlights only. In France everything is on Canal+, and the 5 June 2027 final in Madrid is not free on BBC iPlayer. French free-to-air coverage on M6 is announced but should be reconfirmed closer to the date. This article, updated on 19 October 2026, replaces the version written for the 2025-26 season. It fixes several points that had become wrong: the final in Munich is gone (the 2026 final was played in Budapest), Amazon Prime Video has no Champions League rights in France, and the final is not free on BBC iPlayer.

What is the 2026-27 Champions League calendar?

The 2026-27 season keeps the 36-club format launched in 2024-25: each club plays 8 league-phase matches against 8 different opponents. The top 8 go straight to the round of 16, clubs finishing 9th to 24th play two-legged play-offs, and clubs finishing 25th or lower are eliminated with no drop into the Europa League. Paris Saint-Germain are the holders: they beat Arsenal in Budapest on 30 May 2026 (1-1, 4-3 on penalties).

Who shows the 2026-27 Champions League in each country?

The table below follows the official broadcaster list published by UEFA (checked on 19 October 2026) and adds prices found in the specialist press between late August and October 2026. Prices change often: confirm them on the broadcaster’s site before subscribing.

UK: TNT Sports on HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video

TNT Sports shows most matches, now through HBO Max: 30.99 pounds a month, or 25.99 pounds a month on the annual Saver plan (HBO Max help page). Amazon Prime Video keeps a first-pick Tuesday match (17 matches over the season), included in Prime at 8.99 pounds a month or 95 pounds a year. The BBC only has highlights on Wednesday nights. TNT Sports is now watched through HBO Max, which took over from discovery+ in the UK.

France: Canal+ prices and packages

Canal+ holds the whole competition in France for 2026-27 and has extended its rights through 2030-31. Packages differ by source, and the autumn promotions expired on 30 September 2026:

• Canal+ Sport: all matches, beIN Sports included, 29.99 euros a month in the first year with a commitment then 39.99 euros (seen on 6 September 2026); 39.99 euros a month without commitment (seen on 28 August 2026).
• 100% Canal+: all matches according to Canal+, 19.99 euros a month for 24 months then 32.99 euros, with a commitment and a promotion until 30 September 2026: the current price needs confirming.
• Entry-level Canal+: a selection of fixtures only (the best Wednesday match, or the two best fixtures depending on the source).
• Freebox Ultra: includes the best Wednesday match, on a single stream.

Amazon Prime Video is not on UEFA’s list of French broadcasters: the previous mention of Prime Video as a “second choice” is removed.

Germany: DAZN and Amazon

DAZN shows 186 of the 203 matches, including all the Wednesday ones. Amazon Prime Video shows 17 matches, always the Tuesday top pick. DAZN has dropped its free trial month. German press says the final will be live on ZDF, while UEFA’s list only shows highlights for ZDF: confirm before 5 June 2027.

Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands

In Italy, Sky shows 185 matches and Amazon Prime Video the 18 best Wednesday fixtures. TV8 (Sky, free-to-air) showed matches between foreign clubs last season, but its return is not confirmed. In Spain, Movistar Plus+ keeps exclusivity (Orange TV also offers the competition for one more season) and the press reports the final on RTVE. In French-speaking Belgium, RTL and Proximus share the rights; the law requires free-to-air coverage of matches involving a Belgian club, which means 8 Club Brugge matches this season. In the Netherlands, Ziggo Sport holds the whole 2024-2027 cycle.

United States, Canada, Australia

In the US the competition is on Paramount+ (Essential 8.99 dollars a month with ads, Premium 13.99 dollars a month, prices in force since 15 January 2026 and checked on 11 October 2026 in the help centre), with selected matches on CBS, the final included. Canada is served by DAZN and OneSoccer, Australia by Stan Sport (sport add-on, price to check).

Where can I watch Champions League matches for free and legally?

Contrary to what the previous version of this article suggested, no free-to-air channel shows the competition on a regular basis. The genuinely free options are limited:

• The 5 June 2027 final: free-to-air on M6 in France (rights announced for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 finals, alongside Canal+), as a protected event under a 2004 decree. M6 did show the 2026 final (about 6.2 million viewers), but one TV guide still calls the 2027 channel “not sufficiently confirmed”: recheck before June 2027. Also free in Spain (RTVE, per press reports), Germany (ZDF, per press reports) and Australia (Nine).
• Belgium: 8 league-phase Club Brugge matches (against Liverpool, Aston Villa, Bodo/Glimt, Lens, Inter, PSV, Napoli and Stuttgart) on Club RTL and RTL Play in French, and VTM 2 and VTM GO in Dutch. RTBF does not have Champions League rights this season.
• Highlights: BBC (Wednesday night, through 2030-31) and ZDF (Wednesday night, around 11 pm).

Is the final free on BBC iPlayer?

No, and the claim from the previous version is removed. The BBC has only ever had highlights. For the 2026 final, British press noted that no British free-to-air channel showed it, for the first time since 1992: it was limited to TNT Sports and HBO Max (a one-month HBO Max pass cost 4.99 pounds). Prime Minister Keir Starmer asked TNT Sports to make it free, and no change was reported. For the 2027 final, no free British channel has been announced so far.

How is this different from the free matches of the past?

The previous version mentioned one free ZDF match every Tuesday, matches on RTBF Auvio, and ORF and ServusTV. None of these options appear in the 2026-27 broadcaster lists (UEFA, German, Austrian and Belgian press), so they are removed. For Austria, sources disagree on the broadcasters, so we prefer to claim nothing.

Is a VPN legal for watching the Champions League, and what do courts say?

Using a VPN is legal in the UK, the US and most European countries. The question is the terms of service: Canal+, DAZN, HBO Max and Paramount+ license their offer to a territory and detect VPNs. Bypassing a geographic restriction can lead to account suspension with no refund. No service is “guaranteed to work with a VPN”: these platforms regularly update their blocking.

Two points to know before you travel:

• European Union: the EU cross-border portability regulation lets subscribers temporarily use their subscription in another EU country (temporary stay, subscription taken out before leaving). No VPN is needed in that case. It does not cover the UK or non-EU countries, where access is generally blocked. The sources we checked date from 2018 to 2021: check the current conditions with your provider. UK providers apply their own rules abroad.
• Piracy: in 2026 courts forced VPN providers to block pirate-site addresses (the Cordoba order against NordVPN and Proton VPN in February 2026 remains in force; the court declined to fine NordVPN in May 2026, with the blocks staying in place). These measures target piracy and can cause over-blocking. A VPN does not make a pirate stream legal, and we recommend no illegal streaming site.

When is a VPN actually useful for the Champions League?

Scenario 1: you live in the UK

A VPN adds nothing for live viewing: TNT Sports on HBO Max and Prime Video cover the matches, and the final is paywalled this year. It is still useful to protect your passwords and connection on public Wi-Fi.

Scenario 2: short trip within the European Union

Your subscription may work through EU portability rules, without a VPN. Test the app before the match.

Scenario 3: expat or trip outside your provider’s territory

This is the main use case: a VPN with a server in your home country to reach your subscription. The result is not guaranteed and may breach the terms. Test before match day, with the closest server.

Scenario 4: subscribing to a foreign service from home

DAZN Germany (44.99 euros a month without commitment) or Canal+ are no bargain for a UK viewer: TNT Sports on the annual plan, at 25.99 pounds a month, already shows most matches. Subscribing to a foreign offer without living there also bypasses its territorial restriction (terms, payment methods): we do not recommend it.

What changes after 2027 for Champions League rights?

The current cycle (2024-2027) ends with the 2026-27 season. According to UEFA and the specialist press (November 2025 to April 2026):

• UK: Paramount+ takes most matches, Amazon keeps the Tuesday first pick, the BBC keeps highlights, and Sky Sports takes the Europa League and Conference League. The UK final’s broadcaster is not specified in the sources we checked.
• France: Canal+ keeps the full competition for 2027-28 to 2030-31; the final will stay free-to-air, with no channel named in the sources we checked.
• Germany: Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video, per the press; DAZN loses the Champions League. Coverage of the final is not officially specified.
• Belgium: Canal+ takes the rights from September 2027 (announced on 30 April 2026).
• Spain: Movistar Plus+ is reported to have extended its rights through 2031.
• US: CBS/Paramount+ keeps English-language rights according to 2022 press reports (not rechecked against an official source).

How to prepare for a match or the 5 June 2027 final

1. Subscribe to the VPN at least a week before your trip, then use the refund window to test it.
2. Test a server in your home country (or the country of your subscription) with the broadcaster’s app before match day, at the time you plan to watch.
3. Turn on the kill switch (see our kill switch guide) so a dropped connection does not expose your real IP address.
4. On a TV or console, check whether a Smart DNS is offered (see Smart DNS vs VPN), with no guarantee it works with the broadcaster.
5. Have a plan B: in France the final is free on M6, an option that needs no VPN.

What NOT to do

• Search for a “UCL live stream free”: illegal streaming sites often carry malware and do not become legal with a VPN.
• Use a free VPN: broadcasters quickly block their IP addresses, and the business model sometimes relies on your data.
• Count on BBC iPlayer for the final: it is not shown there.
• Stack Canal+, DAZN and Prime: pick the one subscription that covers your country.
• Wait until the last minute: testing the VPN on match night is the best way to miss kick-off.
